“Agony is the state that precedes death in situations where life gradually fades away. It is characterized by a progressive deterioration of general physical condition, with more or less evident losses of consciousness.”

It is essential that the family receives accurate information about the imminence of death and how it may occur (organ dysfunction over hours or days).

At COINCIDIR, we train families to provide effective comfort to the patient by preventing and managing associated symptoms or problems

We also address in detail during family sessions, among other recommendations:

·       Tolerating and respecting the patient’s and other family members’ adaptation processes, which may manifest as confusion, fear, frustration, anger, resentment, false hopes, or beliefs shaped by past experiences with illness and death.

·       Avoiding distressing comments in the presence of the patient, such as “Is he/she dying already?”

·       Increasing physical contact (giving and receiving affection) due to its calming effect.

·       Facing the impactful physiological changes that may alter the patient’s familiar image.

·       During emotional and sensitive moments, remaining silently by the patient’s side unless they request otherwise. If the patient expresses a need to be alone, it should not be misinterpreted. Offer physical contact, prevent others from interrupting crying (e.g., saying “don’t cry”), avoid changing the subject, leaving the room, or calling someone else.

·       Agreeing on which family member will take responsibility for essential administrative tasks.

·       Agreeing on who will contact the spiritual advisor.
