Grief among workplace colleagues

The course of grief resulting from the loss of one’s own health, the illness of a family member, or the death of a loved one—regardless of the circumstances—is influenced by the social support available from family, friends, and institutions. Equally important is the role played by close individuals such as colleagues in the workplace.
Support among colleagues in professional settings demonstrates appreciation and inclusion within a network of people attentive to one’s well-being. This fosters trust in seeking closeness when needed and provides a sense of interpersonal backing.

Some individuals choose to avoid addressing the topic in order not to make mistakes, to prevent misinterpretation, or simply because they do not know how to express their concern, especially if the subject evokes memories of similar situations, they have experienced as well.
It is important to remember that distancing, absolute silence, or unsolicited advice are not appropriate ways to demonstrate solidarity and empathy, particularly given the ongoing coexistence that naturally occurs in the workplace.
It is not enough to say, “my colleague knows they can count on me if they want.” Empathy can be reflected both in sincere words and in simple acts of service (which carry great emotional significance). Psychologically, these gestures are perceived as tangible support by individuals living with illness or grief.
It is always recommended, before taking any action and in order not to invade privacy, to ask openly, prudently, and respectfully (without probing into details of the situation) whether it is an appropriate moment to offer listening, companionship, and/or practical assistance, such as easing workload, helping with administrative tasks, or meeting immediate needs, while leaving the possibility that support remains available in the future.
Social support for individuals living with health complications or grief is positively and significantly associated with assertive coping, resilience, and psychological well-being in adapting to life changes.
At COINCIDIR, we advise companies on how to provide their employees with the development of communication skills for navigating circumstantial crises that inevitably arise throughout life. The goal is to foster, during difficult times, a psychologically stable and humanized environment that preserves collective well-being.
