Although partial or total remission (reduction or disappearance of symptoms) may seem like the most expected or easiest thing to cope with, it has its degree of complexity. This can lead to extreme fear of relapse (Damocles syndrome) or be harmed again, which triggers hypervigilance (excessive concern about symptoms), immobility, avoidance of activities, catastrophic thinking, and muscle tension, these generate suffering, exacerbate and perpetuate limiting thoughts. This is because the person knows they are alive, but the person they were can no longer be found, having lost the identity of “the sick person” and now facing a return to the world from which illness had distanced them.
