The death of a child is always perceived as unjust; each mother and father face grief differently depending on factors such as the child’s age, cause of death, support network, among others.

In cases of elective abortion, grief begins at the moment of decision-making. In contrast, when death occurs naturally before or after birth, the grieving process is shaped by expectations surrounding the birth, emotional bonds, and family history.

When death results from an accident, feelings of blame or mutual reproach may arise between parents. In all couples, the death of a child can lead either to a revitalization or distancing in the marital relationship.

Many parents experience a desire to die, or a shift, either distancing or deepening, in their religious beliefs. In some cases, pathological reactions may occur, such as turning the deceased child’s room into a shrine or never speaking of the loss again, to the extent that subsequent children may remain unaware of their predecessors.

At COINCIDIR, we offer support during these deeply complex and painful moments, with the aim of helping parents identify and express the emotions and thoughts that are often difficult to share with family or friends, and thus begin to process the loss.
